If you have been searching for a wedding photographer, you have probably seen the words "documentary" and "editorial" everywhere. They are the biggest buzzwords in the industry right now. But what do they actually mean, and how can they exist at the same time?
Here is a breakdown of these two styles and why mixing them is the core of my approach to wedding photography.
What is Documentary Photography?
Documentary photography is all about observation. It is capturing the day exactly as it unfolds without stepping in to pose or direct the moment. Think of it as photojournalism for your wedding. It is the tear rolling down your mom's cheek, the blurry motion on the dance floor, and the unscripted laughs. The goal is pure authenticity.
What is Editorial Photography?
Editorial photography is inspired by high fashion magazines. It is curated, intentional, and artistic. This style focuses on striking compositions, direct flash, bold angles, and highlighting the details of your day in a creative way. It elevates your wedding photos to look like a spread in a fashion publication.
How They Mix
On paper, these two styles sound like total opposites. One is completely candid, and the other is highly directed. But when you blend them together, you get absolute magic. Mixing documentary and editorial photography means you do not have to choose between raw emotion and stunning artistic portraits. You get both.
Why This is My Style
This hybrid approach is exactly how I shoot weddings. I want you to remember exactly how your day felt. That is why I take a documentary approach for the majority of the day. I step back, let you breathe, and allow you to actually experience your wedding with your favorite people instead of treating your timeline like a photoshoot.
When it is time for your couple portraits, I step in with an editorial eye. We will create artistic, anti-pose images that make you look incredible without feeling stiff or awkward. You get the real, unscripted, beautiful moments alongside the stunning, stylish portraits. It is the absolute best of both worlds.
