When Should You Schedule Your Engagement Photos?
One of the most common questions couples ask is how to time their engagement session. If you are having a fall wedding, do you need fall engagement photos? What if you want snowy pictures but your wedding is in the middle of June?
Here is the short answer: it does not matter. Your engagement session is about capturing your connection right now, not perfectly coordinating with your wedding day weather.
The Practical Timeline
Logistically, the sweet spot for an engagement session is 6 to 10 months before your wedding. This gives you plenty of time to get the photos back, design your save-the-dates, and mail them out 6 to 8 months prior to the big day. If you have a shorter engagement, we just schedule the shoot sooner.
Do the seasons need to match?
Absolutely not. In fact, choosing a contrasting season gives you a lot more variety in your photos. If your wedding will be full of lush green summer trees and warm weather, a cozy winter engagement session or a crisp autumn shoot gives you a totally different look to hang in your home. You get the best of both worlds.
Will winter photos look weird at a summer wedding?
This is a frequent worry for couples who love the snow but booked a July wedding. Will displaying photos of you in heavy coats and snow boots look out of place next to your summer floral arrangements? Honestly, no. Your guests are not critiquing the weather in your photos. They are looking at how happy you are. Displaying winter photos at a summer wedding just tells the story of your engagement. It highlights the season of life when you were actively planning the wedding and waiting for the big day.
If you are still worried about the contrast, you can use the photos strategically. Put those snowy photos on your save-the-dates since they will likely go out in the winter anyway. For the actual wedding day decor, choose closer, documentary-style portraits where the focus is purely on your faces and the emotion rather than the seasonal background.
The Bottom Line
Pick a season that fits your vibe as a couple. If you hate sweating, skip the summer session and aim for fall or spring. If you love the idea of running around in the snow, book a winter session. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable, relaxed, and look like yourselves.
