Turning one is a major milestone, not just for your baby, but for you as parents! You made it through the first year, and that deserves a celebration. A cake smash session is a fun, messy, and adorable way to commemorate this achievement.
However, as a professional photographer, I’ve learned that "smashing" a cake isn't always instinctual for little ones. To ensure we get those smiles (and that mess!) you’ve been dreaming of, here are my top tips for preparing for the big day.
1. The "Taste Test" is Crucial
It might surprise you, but many babies have never tasted cake or sugary frosting before their first birthday. The texture of the sponge and the intense sweetness of the icing can sometimes be overwhelming for a baby used to milk and purees.
The Tip: About a week before our session, buy a small cupcake with the same type of frosting you plan to use for the smash. Let your baby play with it and taste it at home in a low-pressure environment. This gets them used to the texture and sweetness, making them much more likely to dive right in when the cameras are rolling!
2. Wardrobe Logistics: Travel vs. Studio
Cake smashes are, by design, incredibly messy. To keep the stress levels low, we need to think about logistics.
The Tip: Dress your baby in a comfortable, loose "travel outfit" for the ride to the location. Do not put them in their photoshoot outfit until you arrive. This prevents car seat wrinkles, accidental drool stains, or diaper leaks from ruining the special outfit before we even start.
Bonus: Bring a spare shirt for yourself! You will likely be grabbing a frosting-covered baby at some point, and you don’t want to ruin your own clothes.
3. Managing Expectations
Every baby reacts differently to a cake smash. Some dive in face-first, while others gingerly poke it with one finger. Some babies don't like the feeling of frosting on their hands and may even cry!
The Tip: Let’s roll with it. Whether they destroy the cake or just stare at it, we will capture their genuine personality. Bringing a favorite dry snack (like puffs) can also help; we can hide them in the frosting to encourage them to dig in.
4. The Clean-Up Strategy
Once the smash is done, you will have a very sticky baby.
The Tip: Bring a warm, wet washcloth in a Ziploc bag and a fluffy towel. If we aren't doing a "splash" tub session afterward, this will be your lifesaver for getting them clean enough for the car ride home.
