One of the most common things I hear from my couples is, "We are so awkward in front of a camera." Honestly, almost everyone feels that way at first!
As a St. Louis wedding photographer, my entire approach is built around capturing your day as a fly on the wall. I truly do not like stiff posing. I want to capture your real connection and the authentic story of your day. If you want those candid, nostalgic photos but feel a little camera shy, here are four easy tips to help you look completely natural on your wedding day.
1. Keep Moving
The easiest way to look stiff is to stand perfectly still. During your couple portraits, I will rarely ask you to just stand and smile. Instead, I will ask you to walk together, sway, or simply interact with each other. Movement creates natural lines and brings out your genuine expressions.
2. Ignore the Camera
Unless we are knocking out your traditional family formals, you have full permission to pretend I am not even there. Look at your partner, talk to them, laugh with them, or whisper an inside joke. The absolute best photos happen when you are entirely focused on each other rather than what my lens is doing.
3. Build Buffer Time Into Your Timeline
This is where my counseling background comes into play. Rushing causes stress, and stress shows on your face. When we build your photography timeline, we will add 10 to 15 minute buffers throughout the day. This gives you time to breathe, grab a drink, and actually soak in the moment. When you are relaxed, your photos will look relaxed.
4. Embrace the Imperfections
If your veil blows wildly in the wind, your hair falls slightly out of place, or you trip over your dress, just roll with it! The perfectly imperfect moments are often the ones that make the best true to life photos. Lean into the chaos and just let yourselves be present.
My goal is to make sure you feel entirely like yourselves. Want to learn more about my documentary approach? Let's connect and start planning your St. Louis wedding!
